It’s the smash-hit film that was turned into an equally smash-hit musical courtesy of Sir Elton John.
Now, a new local production of Billy Elliot The Musical is coming to the Civic Theatre in 2023 and producers are now on the hunt for the show’s leading man.
Co-produced by Newcastle’s Very Popular Theatre Company and The National College of Dance (NCD), Billy Elliot The Musical will run for a three-week season from Saturday 7 October.
A stellar creative team, including producer Daniel Stoddart, director Anna Kerrigan and choreographer Lauren Harvey, are currently on the hunt for a local star to help breathe life into the ambitious production alongside a raft of roles including ballet teacher Mrs Wilkinson, Billy’s brother and father and various ensemble roles.
“Billy Elliot is known for its mind-blowing dance sequences and the fact that our young cast members will get to work with Brett Morgan, Jake Burden and the team at NCD is incredible,” producer Daniel Stoddart said.
Based on the blockbuster 2000 film, Billy Elliot The Musical tells the story of young Billy’s journey from the boxing ring to ballet class in a northern English mining town in the mid-1980s.
Featuring iconic music by Sir Elton John, this inspirational coming-of-age story has been seen by almost 12 million people on five different continents since its 2005 premiere, making it one of the most popular musicals in the world.
