Spring School Holidays

  • 15 September 2021

Spring has sprung and the school holidays are just around the corner. While they're going to look a little different from the usual due to lockdown, it's not all bad news!

Luckily for the kids (or more importantly the parents), Newcastle's cultural attractions have been working hard behind the scenes to put together some online school holiday workshops.

From art classes to science experiments, there's plenty happening to stave off boredom and add something unique to your days. The best part – all events are free!

Keep reading to discover what's online these school holidays…

Newcastle Art Gallery

Join Newcastle Art Gallery for interactive online art programs for primary school aged children delivered by a Gallery Educator.

Making faces with cardboard

Taking inspiration from the KILGOUR PRIZE 2021 exhibition, kids will learn how to make assemblages of faces using cardboard and other materials from around the home. Learn how to cut and construct a basic face shape, then collage other facial features to make your own unique design!

Have some materials ready to go such as cardboard, cereal boxes, egg cartons, assorted dry pasta, string, foil, coloured pencils or markers, scissors and glue.

Event dates: Monday 20th & Wednesday 22nd September, 10am. Free online event, bookings required here.

Nature craft

Join in for an interactive art workshop using materials from your garden or local park! Go on an adventure and gather up some flowers, twigs and leaves to create your own nature craft. Kids will learn how to draw little figures before decorating with blooms and foliage.

Have some materials ready such as a collection of flowers, a sheet of A4 paper, coloured pencils or markers, scissors, paintbrush, glue and any other natural materials like twigs, feathers and leaves.

Dates: Monday 27th & Wednesday 29th September, 10am. Free online event, bookings required here.

Once registered for an event, a Zoom link will be sent by email along with a reminder email closer to the event date. Both programs will also be recorded and then made available to stream on-demand, so you can watch for inspiration and create later.

Blackbutt Reserve

See what the wildlife are up to during lockdown on the Blackbutt Facebook page, or get stuck into one (or all) of the fun activity sheets! Test your knowledge of wildlife at Blackbutt Reserve using the wildlife crossword, take a walk around your yard or street as see what you can find as part of a scavenger hunt, make your own stick insect, or go for a nature walk and see how many of the listed items you can find.

Newcastle Museum

Calling all budding scientists…get your science fix these school holidays thanks to Newcastle Museum's Museum Express at Home. The next series of fun science experiments to try at home will be streamed on the Museums Facebook page - tune in and get ready to explore, create and learn at home.
