Tantrum Throws Open Doors to Emerging Artists this Weekend

  • 22 June 2023

Budding Newcastle creatives will have the chance to be immersed in all manner of art chat and industry discussions this weekend,  thanks to Tantrum Youth Arts.

The Merewether-based arts company will throw open the doors on Saturday 24 June for its annual Showroom industry day.

The day gives local emerging artists an invaluable opportunity to connect with industry professionals and other emerging artists, and find out how they got started as independent makers.

A highlight of this year’s program is a masterclass hosted by Robbi James, Director and CEO of Critical Stages Touring - Australia’s leading touring company.

Robbi will draw on his 15 years of experience in the  industry to guide emerging and independent artists who are hoping to produce and present their own work, or explore touring options for new work.

The day will also  feature a panel discussion - Outburst - What Have I Done - that will see emerging independent artists Hannah Armstrong and Sonia Dodd, and established artists Janie Gibson and Adam Deusien discuss how they make and present their work, how  to get work seen by an audience, where to find funding, and more.

Attendees will also have the chance to be the first crucial audiences for works in development by Tantrum’s 2023 Trajectory Residents - Angela Kowalski, Joshua Ingle, and September Jones.

And best of all, Tantrum is making the event as accessible as possible by introducing a pay-what-you-can model for Showroom 2023.

“One of the most important parts of being an artist is hanging out with other artists, talking about what you’re working on, what you aspire to, swapping tips and building those important connections,” Tantrum Creative Director Nel Kintish said.

“Showroom brings together the emerging artists of the region to do just that, while also engaging in valuable moments of learning and networking with professional arts practitioners.”

Showroom 2023 is on Saturday 24 June from 11am at Tantrum Youth Arts (101 City Road, Merewether). Head here for more information.
