Everyone loves a long weekend! Whether you’re having a staycation or you’re in town for just a few days, there’s loads of great events in and around Newcastle that are guaranteed to make it a memorable one.
The long weekend is off to a good start on Friday night with a raft of entertainment to revel in. St Francis Xavier’s College will present Twelfth Night, one of Shakespeare’s best loved plays. Directed by Patrick Campbell, this joyous romp with mistaken identities and misplaced love will feature some of Newcastle’s best young actors. Come along to the Playhouse for a guaranteed night of laughs and mayhem.
Over on the Civic Theatre stage get ready for some big belly laughs as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival hits up Newcastle with a diverse line-up of the hottest acts. Featuring a cast of Australian stars, talented newcomers, and special guest international performers, this will be one jampacked night of comedy sure to tickle everyone’s funny bone. Arrive early to enjoy preshow entertainment at the Civic Bar by local indie-folk/pop singer and songwriter Rod Coote.
Over two sessions on Friday night Newcastle Art Gallery in partnership with Catapult Dance will present HOME: The Flipside Project – youth choreographic project. The Flipside Project is a nationally awarded contemporary choreographic dance project where young people living in Newcastle and the Greater Hunter work collaboratively with professional choreographers, composers and visual designers. This unique and creative project will see three dance ensembles create original works that are presented to audiences across local, national and international performances and festivals.
Love gin? Come celebrate World Gin Day at Earp Distilling Co on Saturday afternoon. Featuring live music, local boutique food stalls, the Fever Tree gin tasting bar and delicious street eats, this event is going to be fun! There are two afternoon sessions available, make sure you book your tickets ahead of time.
Show your support for local artists over at The Rogue Scholar for ARTshake. What is ARTshake? It’s what happens when you mix artistic disciplines together to create something new and unexpected. Artists of opposite and contrasting disciplines will connect to collaborate and respond to each other’s works in a live audience setting to create improv art. Think musicians responding to dancers or visual artists responding to spoken word pieces…the combinations of artistic practices are endless! The best part is every single cent of ticket sales goes directly into the artist’s pocket.
Forget about having a lazy Sunday – Monday’s a public holiday so make the most of it and head to The Midtown Darkside Festival in Bestie’s courtyard. Presented by The Rogue Scholar, Floozy Coffee and Jam’s Karaoke, the day long festival will be jam-packed with entertainment including live bands, beer yoga, a silent disco, miso making lessons, sake tasting, karaoke rooms, live mural painting, fortune tellers, and tarot card reading. Indulge in coffee by Floozy Coffee and sweet treats by Cake Boi, tantalise your tastebuds at the dark beer pop up bar, or nourish your green thumb at the indoor plant sale by The Green Altar.
From Sunday afternoon Hunter Drama students will hit the boards at the Civic Theatre’s Playhouse with a comedy avalanche of slapstick, jokes, and gags that will have you rolling in the aisles. Showcasing their extremely dramatic and zany talents, Festival of The Fools will feature the cream of the Hunter’s most talented youth in this mid-year festival where your cheeks will ache from laughter.
