This Weekend: 24-26 June

  • 23 June 2022

Looking for a little direction on what to do this weekend? There is certainly a bumper weekend of events happening in Newcastle and once again there is something for everyone.  Learn a new skill at a workshop, attend a family friendly event, catch a show on stage or screen, peruse the markets or connect with friends at one of the many party, fundraisers or social events. From life drawing to a Taylor Swift appreciation party, check out all the options below.

So, what's ON this weekend in Newcastle and surrounds?

Learn a new skill at a local workshop

Connect with your creative brain as you learn a new skill at one of the many workshops on offer this weekend. Try your hand at life drawing at Playstate Curate where every fortnight a new model will be introduced for you to study and draw, with a little bit of a quirkiness added to it as well. If you are more interested in 3D art, Clay Sketching will guide you through the process of creating a 3D 'sketch' with clay and a life model. While you get to take home your very own sculpture made from air-dry clay, the main objective is to improve observation skills and general brain joy!
Explore the colourful world of Alcohol Inks Arts this Saturday afternoon in a two hour beginners workshop. You'll practice first on Yupo paper then you will paint your very own alcohol ink tile artwork.

If you have ever thought about trying your hand resin art, book into the Introductory Resin Art workshop at Allettare Dezigns on Saturday. You will explore different techniques and effects you can create when working with resin.
The Repair Café is back this month at Lambton Library.  Learn to repair rather than replace in these repair skill sessions. This month featured repair skills include bicycles, furniture, small hand tools, clothing and toys. This event will also include a plant/seed swap brought to you by Green Thumb Social.

Catch a show on stage or screen

Escape reality for two hours and book tickets to a show on stage or screen. Don't miss The Travelling Film Festival as it returns to Newcastle from the 24th-26th June. Catch all nine films across the weekend or book individual tickets to a film that captures your interest. The hard part is choosing which one to see!

Newcastle-based playwright Daniel Scott brings his latest product 'Eden' to the Brunker Community Theatre launching this weekend. Set in a lighthouse keeper's cottage on NSW's south coast, EDEN asks whose version of the past is most reliable in this original drama.
Catch a live theatre performance of The Les Darcy Show at the Newcastle Theatre Company. The Les Darcy Show is a one hour play telling the story of Maitland Boxing legend Les Darcy.  It will be an evening to remember with boxing, a local legend, a love story, songs and dancing.
Comedy is always a hit in Newcastle and this weekend catch three shows that will keep you laughing.
This Friday the laughs are a plenty at the Newcastle Comedy Club where some of the best local comics, and special guest headliners from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and abroad will be in town to keep you entertained all night.
Judith Lucy and Denise Scott return to the Civic Theatre this Saturday evening with their show 'Still Here'. Join Jude and Scotty for what could loosely be called a play – think Waiting for Godot meets Flying High – that is not only full of shameless gags but sees them confronting their greatest fear. Andrew Portelli will keep the laughs coming on Sunday evening with his one man comedy show 'Tough Guy' at the Newcastle Comedy Club.

Peruse the wares at the markets and fairs!

This weekend in addition to the Homegrown Markets at the Station on Saturday featuring over 100 eco, handmade and design stalls and the Made and Found markets showcasing a combination of pre-loved and handmade products, mums-to-be are invited to the hey there BABY Fair at the Newcastle Showgrounds Exhibition Centre. The hey there BABY fair is Australia’s brand new baby fair, offering a showcase of gorgeous, on-trend baby and toddler products. Stroll the aisles and discover a range of beautiful and practical baby and toddler items from clothing to skin care; feeding and décor plus everything in between. Check it out on Saturday at 10am.

Take the kids to a family friendly event

The new and improved McCauley Park playground is opening this weekend. Join us for a family friendly community event this Sunday at 12pm. Tarro's newest play area has been designed to cater for a wide range of ages and will include swings, slides, climbing and balancing components. Minmi Reserve is also officially opening this weekend on Sunday at 10am for a community event where you can explore the new multiplay unit, the balancing trails and the sensory bridge.

Over six weekends throughout June and July 2022, Lone Star Rib House Kotara will be hosting a range of free and fun activities for kids to enjoy every Sunday. From 12:30pm - 2:30pm each Sunday, local kids will be able to enjoy face painting and balloon twisting, providing a fun day out for the whole family.
Before the school holiday crowds, head to The Soft Library by Cat Rabbit exhibition at the Newcastle Library on Saturday. Newcastle Libraries is turned into a fantastical library run by bears, or ‘libearians’. Literary characters and authors are brought to life as bears along with shelves of felt books and a desk of library paraphernalia – all handmade by the artist in felt and fabric.
The Newcastle Unity in Diversity Festival returns this year this Saturday for another day full of delicious multicultural food stalls, entertainment, and family friendly activities.

Connect at a social event

Whether you prefer a low key event or something a little more spectacular, there are a few options to connect socially this weekend.
The Stars of Newcastle fundraiser still has tickets available on Friday evening to this wonderful event. Get ready for a night of fun, DANCING and spectacular entertainment all in the name of working towards a cancer-free future.
Shake it off at the Newcastle Hotel this Friday night for the Taylor Swift Appreciation Party! Their best DJs will be playing all her biggest hits plus chart-toppers from similar artists in the club all night. Join the Tay Tay karaoke comp, belt out one of her hits at karaoke and you could win some free drinks! Best of all students are free and non students are only $10.

Join the celebration at The Y2C Launch Party at the Creator Incubator where Newcastle Art Gallery's Youth Advisory Group will celebrate the digital launch of their Youth to Collection (Y2C) Project. Dance to local DJ's, enjoy video installations and projections by emerging artists and dine on food provided by food trucks.
For a different pace, head to Grooves on the Green at Adamstown Bowling Club on Saturday for a FANTASTIC day of live tunes on the green!
On Sunday, grab some friends and head to Lawn Liaison at Bar Beach Bowling and Sporting Club for Newcastle’s most social Sunday session; with lawn bowls, friends, music, cocktails, and prizes!
Casually compete for the winning prize with a few rounds of lawn bowls. Sip cocktails and enjoy the sun with new and old friends, while the DJ gets the music pumping in the background.
