Winter highlights to mark in the diary

  • 19 July 2022

We may be halfway through winter but there are still plenty of events to mark in the diary. We have certainly hit the winter chills but don't let the cold deter you from experiencing some great events happening in July and August. Rug up warm and grab some friends for some winter fun! Check out some of the highlights we have listed below.

Show your support at a community event
There are plenty of community events organised in July and August that you can support.
Seniors are invited to Club Lambton to share a scone with jam and cream while meeting new friends in your area. The only requirement is that you are over 65 years and enjoy a chat and of course a love of homemade scones and tea.

Do your community service this year on National Tree Day at the family friendly community planting event on Sunday 31st July. With your help 2,000 native trees and grasses will be planted to increase biodiversity and create a pocket of habitat for native fauna in a well-loved reserve. Gather after the planting for a BBQ (includes vegetarian options) courtesy of Lions Australia Mayfield Waratah Blind and Vision Impaired, Inc.

Visit a local market for something unique
Who doesn't love a market and if we get some of the spring like days we have been having, it's the perfect weather to peruse the stallholders at an upcoming market. My Kids Market returns on Sunday 31 July where you can buy quality pre-loved clothing, toys, books, shoes, bikes, prams, puzzles, and nursery items.

Also, on Sunday 31 July for the first time in Newcastle, the Bastille Market will be showcasing all things French with the largest selection of French gourmet food and artisans. Head to the Station for baguettes, croissants, macarons, crepes, croque monsieur, French linen, French baskets, berets, handmade jewellery, and lots more!

Art Bazaar returns to Lambton Park this August and showcases Hunter Arts Network's unique, handmade artisan goods including a wide variety of carefully selected stalls featuring premium local artisan handmade products. Food trucks, coffee and entertainment will also be available on the day.

Cheer out in support at a local sporting event
With the Rugby League games in full swing leading up to the finals in October, the Knights have a few home games scheduled over July and August. Don’t miss the Knights vs the Sydney Roosters on Friday 22 July, the Knights vs the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Sunday 31 July and the Knights vs the Canberra Raiders on Sunday 21 August.

Changing codes, cheer on the Newcastle Jets as they start their Australia Cup campaign with a match against Adelaide United at McDonald Jones Stadium on 30 July. Cheer on the boys as they take on the Reds in this must win clash.  Winners in this round progress onto the round of 16, with the losers immediately eliminated. Show your support in this crucial match!

Check out something a little different
Pastry chef and chocolatier Dean Gibson and industrial designer Jon Pryer are setting a World Record for their production of a kinetic chocolate sculpture with the most moving parts. Called Iron Shark, the 2.5m-long, steampunk inspired chocolate shark will have 30+ moving parts and made entirely of 100% high quality Italian Irca chocolate. It'll be built throughout July in The Creator Incubator gallery and will be open to visitors to watch the progress.

The Intergalacular Sci Fi Spectacular Pt. II is a high vibe sci-fi cabaret experience running during 21-24 of July inside Newcastle Museum. The show itself is inside the venue in an underground style warehouse aesthetic befitting of the Intergalacular experience. Afterwards the lights will be dimmed and the DJ's will start. Outside around the old Civic Station is a completely free, open to the public, outdoor pre-show entertainment zone featuring food vendors, bar & picnic zone, fire barrels, weird & wonderful sideshow booths & a program of free performances.

Straight from the score and onto the stage, the man known as Mozart appears amid a storm of powder, tumbling and twirling, as musical mayhem and movement fuse in this family show with a circus twist. Designed to amaze people from the age of three and upwards, Wolfgang’s Magical Musical Circus reinvents the composer’s magical music in a skillful and illuminating show, featuring Circa’s dexterous daredevil artists and a live accordionist.

Sing along with the cast from a musical theatre performance
Celebrating its 21st anniversary, the original New York and Las Vegas hit Menopause The Musical® is coming to the Civic Theatre this week. Inspired by a hot flush and a bottle of wine, Menopause The Musical® is a celebration for women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “The Change”.

Who doesn't love a school theatre performance and this week you can experience the magic of Christmas in July when Newcastle Grammar School presents Elf the Musical Jr.

The Spongebob Musical by YPT opened during the school holidays but will continue until early August where you can follow the adventures of SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy and Squidward on their mission to save the town of Bikini Bottom and have the Best Day Ever!

Metropolitan Players is bringing “Shrek The Musical” to Newcastle this August! Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film, brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favourite ogre to life on the stage. With a fairy tale cast and wonderful singing and dancing, this lavish musical is a monster-sized spectacular.
