The spotlight will well and truly be shone on our youngest citizens over the next few days as Youth Week celebrations kick off throughout Newcastle.
The largest celebration for everyone aged between 12 to 24 years in NSW, this year Youth Week will run from Thursday 20 April to Sunday 30 of April with the theme of ‘Connect, Participate, Celebrate.’
And Newcastle is definitely coming to the party.
One of the highlights of Newcastle’s Youth Week Celebrations is sure to be the Civic Takeover on Saturday 22 April.
Kicking off from 2pm at the Newcastle Visitor Information Centre, this event will feature a stacked program of live music from emerging local performers, market stalls, a youth art exhibition, an artist-led sculptural workshop, as well as pop-up skate ramps!
Also, Newcastle Art Gallery will be hosting a free drop-in workshop by local emerging artist Aksara Harriram.
Throughout the day, Aksara will be creating an evolving imaginary floating suburb with the community. Learn how to make a cityscape and collaborate with each other to create a suspended work of art from everyday materials.
Oh, and don’t forget to bring some old cardboard boxes along to upcycle these into works of art!
If music, art and food are your thing, then SNAK N RAP at the Maryland Neighbourhood Centre on Friday 21 April is the event for you.
SNAK N RAPs are community-based and youth-focused events that combine music, art, food, community and connection as a way to inspire young people to connect with their communities. The SNAK is about providing free food, the RAP is encouraging community conversations.
Participation might look like, getting creative by doing one of the art activities, it might be getting on the mic for spoken words or a freestyle rap. Alternatively, a young person can come along to the event and connect with their peers and others in the community.
Newcastle University will also be hosting a celebration of youth and diversity with Young N’ Cultured on Friday 28 April.
This event is enriched by the sounds, colours and spirit of cultural songs, dance and storytelling.
Showcasing both traditional and contemporary talents that exist in Newcastle’s many multicultural communities.
This event is a great way to highlight and celebrate the wealth of diversity we have here in Newcastle.
And don’t forget to head here to stay-up-to-date on all events happening around you.
