Pavilion of Sand

Wheeler Place will be re-imagined as a landscape that recalls what lies beneath its paved colonial grid – a landscape of sand – once moved by wind, floods and tides. Sand will be returned to the heart of the city as structure, ballast, shelter and seating for a pavilion that celebrates and centers Awabakal and Worrimi Culture for New Annual Festival 2022. The Pavilion will be home to a program of dance, native food workshops, language workshops and performance throughout the festival. A space that centers Awabakal cultural practice, people and stories. 
 
Through a process that sought to include the local Aboriginal Community in its design a process of workshops and story-work leading up to the festival, the design of the Pavilion and its shade cloth roof creates “an almost ghostly, transient version of what was once here and who was using this land before us, bringing the past and present together in one place.” (Jasmine Craciun)

Be sure to book in to free daily workshops being held in art, language, clap sticks, dance, bush tucker, tools and spears, and canoeing. 

Space available for daily drop-in sessions in art, fishing net assembly and tool making from 11:00am - 3:00pm daily. No bookings required.

WET WEATHER CONTINGENCY: In the event of severe weather, ticket holders will be notified of any cancellations via email and/or SMS.

Art - Highlighting and educating on the different Aboriginal art styles and where they come from.
Dance - Workshop in Aboriginal dance and song construction
Clap Sticks - Making workshop
Language - Introduction into the Awabakal language workshop
Bush Food - Medicine other uses informative talk
Tools Spears - The Making of fishing and hunting spear construction 
Tools Spears, Boomerangs, Canoe - The making and demonstrating of our day to day saltwater tools.
Circle Connections - Coming together to build confidence, embrace identity, and learn about Aboriginal practices. Connect mind, body and soul.

Pavilion of Sand is a collaboration between Awabakal built-environment practitioner Shellie Smith, designer and Barkindji artist Jasmine Craciun and Future Method Studio – Co-directed by Wiradjuri designer and anti-disciplinary artist Joel Sherwood-Spring and Genevieve Murray.
