Speak What You Feel - A Voice & Text Workshop for Performance
Join actor and voice teacher Janie Gibson for an introductory voice & text workshop. In this session you will explore your connection to your natural speaking voice through practical exercises in relaxation, breath awareness and feeling voice vibrations in the body. You will also have the opportunity to explore your connection to speaking text, be it your own or the writing of another.
For this workshop you will need to bring:
- 4-6 lines of poetic text and learn it by heart. This can be your own writing, a poem by another writer or some Shakespearean verse. Choose something you feel a personal connection to, even if you don't know why as yet
- A water bottle
One of a series of three interconnected storytelling workshops. Come to one or come to all three!
Ages 18+
About the presenter
Janie Gibson is an actor, theatre-maker, director and teaching artist based in Newcastle. She uses the ritual of theatre as a forum for human connection; a site to hold radical ideas, witness multivalent perspectives and offer counter-narratives to the confinements of the dominant culture.
Her theatre practice is born out of research and training in leading European ensemble theatre, contemporary performance and an ongoing exploration into the human voice. This search has taken her work around the globe in collaborations with Anu Almagro (Song of the Goat), Odra Ensemble (Song of the Goat, Poland), Ultimavez (BE), Shakespeare and Company (USA), Kristin Linklater (Orkney, Scotland) and nationally with New Annual Festival, Curious Legends, NEXT WAVE, Tantrum Youth Arts, PACT Theatre, Roslyn Oades, BYDS and UTP. As a teaching artist she leads workshops and classes in Linklater voice, ensemble theatre, Shakespeare and theatre-making. She works with actors, artists, professionals and young people to nurture their creative impulses and empower them to tell their stories. Most recently Janie has established Whale Chorus: a new professional theatre company in Newcastle.
