In the central part of Newcastle's CBD, the Civic Precinct contains a cluster of buildings, uses and open spaces which define a theme of citizenship, symbolic social order, and civilised ceremonial gathering.  But how did this really happen?  How was a rather undistinguished sprawl of industrial and commercial buildings at the western end of the CBD at the end of the 19th century transform into the cherished public place that we see today?

Join a guided history walking tour of the Civic area of 1.7km, over 1.5 hours to learn the story, discuss, see some interesting old photos and perhaps be surprised at some stories and sites.  The walk starts and finished at Newcastle Museum, and is suitable for old-timers, city newcomers, visitors and all ages.  In case of inclement weather on the day, an indoor event at the Museum will take its place.
